2020 Begins with an eccentric and fun festival just 17 miles from us in Goodland, FL.
The Goodland Mullet Festival is held annually prior to the Superbowl. Visit with us at the Boat House Marco from January 24 - 26, 2020 and take the short drive to enjoy this Old Florida festival featuring varied fresh seafood delights including fried and smoked mullet along with arts and crafts, and live music. Admission is FREE.
February 7-9, 2020 ushers in the 50th Annual Everglades Seafood Festival opens in a new window in Everglades City, FL ~ Gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. Attendance is FREE and features the best in fresh seafood, country music, and carnival rides and craft booths for the kids. The first festival held in 1970 helped purchase playground equipment. This tradition continues with proceeds benefiting local organizations and college scholarships for local students. A leisurely 45 minute ride from us, this is well worth attending.
The best eats come to our backyard beginning in March with the Annual Marco Island Seafood & Music Festival opens in a new window March 20 - 22, 2020. With amazing live music throughout the weekend, and an assortment of 60 craft vendors offering an array of artistry, it’s a must for one and all! The festival features fresh seafood delicacies and delights for all taste buds, including grouper, crab cakes, stone crab claws, shrimp, crawdads, chowder and more. For those who prefer the ‘turf’ side, there’s a large menu available. Plus, beer and wine will be available for thirsty patrons. Single day admission is $10 or $16 for 2 days.
April highlights the best of Marco Island’s culinary talents with the 30th Annual Taste of Marco opens in a new window on April 19, 2020. Hosted by the Greater Marco YMCA, this fundraising event showcases the creations of Marco Island’s finest restaurants including: CJ’s on the Bay, Coldstone Creamery, Crabby Lady, Island Country Club, Italian Deli, JW Marriott, 10K Alley, Mango’s Dockside Bistro, Marco Island Yacht Club, Michelbob’s Ribs and Steak, Pincher’s Crab Shack, Subway on North Collier, Verdi’s Bistro, and ZAZA Kitchen. The Black Pearl Pirate Ship sets sail from Rose Marina, offering adventures on the Gulf of Mexico. An interactive family pirate excursion lets kids dress up in pirate attire and tattoos for an hour of 'Ahoy Matey!' adventure. For a more relaxed time, their sunset tours offer 1.5 hours ride as the sunset paints the evening sky.
For those visiting beginning in October, plan ahead and get ready for thrills and chills with Marco Mystery and History Tours for a unique, mysterious, ghostly historical tour of our beloved island. Sure to get you in the ‘spirit’ of the harvest season. For a truly memorable way to explore Marco Island on your next visit, rent out a cruiser or tandem bicycle, electric bike or scooter from Island Bike Shop. With wide bike paths weaving throughout the island, including paths leading to the beaches and linking popular attractions, it’s an inexpensive way to spend quality time with your family and friends. Mostly flat terrain makes for smooth riding, and the breezes keep riders cool while exploring the subtropical plants and trees and diverse native wildlife. While the waterways hold many opportunities for adventurous exploration, the wildlife world of the land and skies around Marco provide an equally amazing array of discoveries.
Just 8 miles northeast of us is the self-directed half mile trail of Briggs Boardwalk. Though a short stroll, this path passes through 5 unique habitats, hosts signage along the way that details the various flora and fauna. Over 150 species of birds have been spotted here including, Wood Stork, Glossy Ibis, King Rail, Common Nighthawk, Brown Thrasher and more than 15 species of wood-warbler. For a longer excursion, join a conservatory volunteer for a guided walk through the boardwalk, beach and back bay areas of Clam Pass. Depending on when you visit, you’re likely to see woodpeckers, hawks, owls, and many warblers, thrushes and vireos during migration. Both are part of the Conservatory of SW Florida Nature Center/Briggs Nature Center and Rookery Bay on Marco Island and listed as part of the Great Florida Birding Trail site.
A short drive south of us on Marco Island, you can visit Otter Mound Preserve Walking Trail. Covering nearly 2.5 acres, this tropical hardwood hammock preserve sits on one of the only remaining Calusa shell mounds. It contains artifacts of both archeological and historic importance. Fifty-seven species of birds (including the Cooper's hawk pictured above) and one hundred and twenty-seven plant species have been recorded at Otter Mound Preserve. Other wildlife observed includes the Florida gopher tortoise, Virginia opossum, armadillo, raccoon, grey squirrel and even the occasional bobcat.

Snuggled on the shore of Collier Bay, paces from the Marco Bay and access to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, the Boat House Marco sits ideally for spotting a variety of water friends from our docks. Dolphins and Manatee often visit our waters.
Our surrounding waterways including the bays and estuaries of the mangroves offer a host of wildlife for those seeking to get into a wildlife or fishing adventure. With alligators, crocodiles, river otters, sharks, loggerhead turtles and herptiles (snakes!), there’s thrills around nearly every waterway corner.
A great place to start planning is at the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Mostly accessible only via boat, this family friendly, ADA compliant refuge can be accessed 24 hours a day on navigable waterways for self-guided tours.
Another place ready for wild adventuring is the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center where you can participate in customized guided tours or self-guided tours. Offering a full selection of activities and ways to explore nature. For those wanting to explore what’s in our waters on their own, there’s Paddlecraft Park ready for your canoe, kayak or paddleboard to carry you into McIlvane Bay, a shallow mangrove fringed bay that provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploring quiet backwaters in a relatively unexplored part of the Reserve. For guided tours, your family or group will be thrilled to enjoy a variety of kayak tours led by the Rising Tide Explorers.

Rainy Day Things to Do on Marco Island
Marco Island Historical Museum - Located at 180 South Heathwood Drive, Marco Island. This museum is one of five museums within the Collier County Museum family, where admission is free all summer long at all locations. Ours is a step back into time, where you can explore the history of the Calusa Indians within the many displays and the re-created village. This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the museum. On display through September 26, 2019 you’ll find: BUILDING A DREAM: THE 25 YEAR HISTORY OF THE MARCO ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY. This exhibit exalts the efforts of the small group of friends that passionately worked to keep the history and heritage of our island alive and thriving - leading to the construction of our museum in 1994. July 4th 2019 Things to Do on Marco Island
- The Annual 4th of July celebration is set for Thursday, July 4, 2019 at South Marco Beach located at 130 S. Collier Blvd with public parking available at the intersection of Swallow Avenue and Collier Blvd., Marco Island. This all day event offers entertainment for the entire family with fireworks at 9 p.m.
- While vacationing with us, perhaps plan to stop in the Marco Island Historical Museum where admission is free for your entire group. Featured through September 26, 2019 you can experience “Building A Dream.” The exhibit is the 25 year history of the Marco Island Historical Society. The exhibit will be on display in the museum’s Sandlin Gallery. Also on special display through April 2021, the museum hosts a special Smithsonian exhibition featuring the prehistoric Key Marco Cat and other archaeological Calusa artifacts.

Easter will be here before we know it, and to celebrate we have the Marco Island Spring Jubilee opens in a new windowon Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Mackle Park from 10 am til Noon. A free event offered for kids 10 and under with games, crafts, food and an Easter Egg Hunt.

April 28th brings the 28th Annual Taste of Marco opens in a new window, benefiting the Marco YMCA scholarship fund. Many of the area’s finest restaurants step out to bring their tastiest fare, with a 50/50 raffle and other awards to be handed out for People’s Choice, Best Decorated and Best Theme, and live music by the Ben Allen Band from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Serving a variety of beer and wine, this is an event fun for the entire family~ Just $8 per adult entry, and children 12 and under are FREE with a paid adult.
